“I love my earth, that’s why I choose to feed it naturally.” Olivier Azan, Languedoc Roussillon region of France, 2006
Greener Planet is a totally new concept that brings together like-minded organic winemakers and growers f
rom around the world; all of whom shares the commitment to make wine that tastes delicious, represents a value and is produced earth-friendly without damaging the environment. To qualify for Greener Planet, each vineyard must be certified organic by an internationally accredited organization.
The vineyards that participate in supplying organically grown grapes for Greener Planet are dedicated to the commitment of organic, earth-friendly production. For at least 5,000 years, human beings have been crushing grapes and allowing them to ferment naturally into wine. Regrettably in recent times, as with other farm products, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and other synthetic chemicals have been used on vineyards. The chemicals were intended to make life easier for the farmer and increase production.
However, time has shown the devastating effects of these chemicals on the planet. By supplying organically grown grapes to Greener Planet, each grower is bringing balance back to their vineyards. The growers do not use any synthetic chemicals on their vineyards, instead utilize compost, cover crops, farm animals, and natural minerals to protect and nourish the vineyards. To guarantee their commitment, each grower has been certified organic by ECOCERT, a world leader in organic certification and is accredited for National Organic Program (NOP) certification.
By utilizing natural procedures in the vineyards, the grapes reflect a more pure varietal character and a more true expression of terroir, the way nature intended. Traditional techniques of hand pruning assist the organic farming to ensure the grapes fully express the varietal character and the notion of terroir, sense of place. Hand pruning permits the growers to fine tune the vineyard by trimming the weaker shoots, leaves and unripe grape bunches. At harvest time, each grower selects the best bunches, yielding a more uniform ripeness and a higher quality.
The winemakers for Greener Planet utilize simple vinification techniques to maintain the integrity of the organically grown grapes. Some of the techniques used during the vinification process are racking, transfer wine from one container to another once the sediment has settled, and filtering through organic filters by a gravity fed system. These simple techniques plus the high quality of the grapes reduces the need for sulfites, which are kept below the authorized limits, yet a little is necessary to maintain the quality and prevent bacterial growth.
Through the commitment of the growers, winemakers and the standards of ECOCERT, Greener Planet wines are delicious, socially conscious wines at an every day affordable price. As an additional commitment to the environment, all Greener Planet wines are bottled in partially recycled glass and the label is made from recycled paper and printed with sustainable inks. With every glass of Greener Planet, you can directly help the environment and the communities surrounding the vineyards. Every glass matters towards reaching a Greener Planet.
“My vines are in the region of Don Quixote. I like to treat them naturally as they’d have done in his day.” Lorenza Delgada, Tierra de Castilla, Spain 2007
Greener Planet - Wine into Water
Greener Planet believes one of the world’s biggest problems is a chronic shortage of water. Over a billion people do not have access to clean drinking water, which is why Greener Planet has started the Wine into Water project. For every bottle sold, Greener Planet will make a contribution to Water Aid; a non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to the provision of safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene education for the world’s
poorest people. Greener Planet will not produce any wine in areas afflicted with chronic water shortages.
Since 2006, Greener Planet has donated over $20,000 to Water Aid projects in India and Burkina Faso in West Africa. Over a billion people do not have access to clean drinking water, and an estimated 5 million people die from preventable water-related diseases each year. If you would like to organize a local wine related event in support of Water Aid, please contact Greener Planet at wateraid@greenerplanetwine.com and they will let the world know about it.
