Fair Trade: The Story

Every bottle bears the Fair Trade Certification™ logo guaranteeing that our partners in the developing regions of South Africa, Chile and Argentina are getting a fair deal for their grapes in the global south.

Our fair trade wines are farmed without harmful chemicals or genetically modified organisms (GMO).  Instead they are farmed in favor of protecting the farmers’ health and preserving the land for future generations.  The premium price paid to the farmers help to establish safe working conditions, improve local water conditions, build schools, construct safe housing, establish heath centers, and many more projects voted on by the community.

Farming for Fair Trade WineFairhills has used their premiums to acquire computers, establish adult literary programs, and helped to renovate three day care centers in June of 2006.  Before the renovation 74.4% of the children were not exposed to early childhood development prior to primary school.  The day cares created 15 full-time jobs and 100% of the children are given the opportunity to go to day care.  Recently the members voted on developing a community area to play football (soccer in the US), netball, bowling courts, and rugby.  The area is not only for sports, but will also be used to address personal problems and discuss issues stemming from addictions.

Fair Trade supportAccording to Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO), a non-profit 23 member organization, the US sales of Fairtrade certified products in 2007 was approximately $1.15 billion US dollars up 46%.  The worldwide sales of Fair Trade wine was up by 79.5%, reaching 4.3 million bottles (750ml). With every glass of fair trade wine from Fairhills, Neu Direction, Wandering Grape, Step by Step, and Los Cowboys, you can directly help the growers, their community, and their environment.  Neu Direction, Wandering Grape, Fairhills, Los Cowboys, and Step by Step provide benefits for over 1000 beneficiaries in Argentina, Chile and South Africa that focuses on improving the living and social conditions.
